For this project, I had the opportunity to choose my brief from ISTD and RDT and then create a solution for that brief. I decided to do the ISTD brief “Not Just Fleurons” for my project.

I began my research by exploring bamboo and cacti, but focused on cacti due to the richer information available and their potential health and environmental benefits. To present this, I designed an informative leaflet. My design process started with selecting typefaces that reflected the content. I used two original photographs, including a central image of prickly pear cacti, which my content centred on, and another to suggest hierarchy among species. I used a 10x10 grid system for the format to maintain a consistent layout and structure. I chose a black and white colour scheme to focus on typography, and printed on recyclable seaweed paper, a natural choice in line with the project’s ecological theme.

This project helped me develop my typographic skills, challenging me as I typically work in illustration. Although I initially leaned toward using illustrations, I learned to refocus on typography, ultimately strengthening the outcome.
